Tuesday 26th April 2011 MK Wanderers 2 – 0 Great Linford
On a memorable evening at Kents Hill, MK Wanderers Senior mens team made history in winning the Intermediate Division. The first time a senior mens side has won a league title. The game itself was a tight game against a side that knew they had to win the game to give themselves a chance of winning the double after their good league cup win the previous week. Both sides set out with the same formation and matched each other for large periods of the game. Neither side was able to create much and chances were few and far between. Wanderers having a couple of half chances through Ware and Dean and Great Linford with a couple of long range efforts that were blocked. Also, a cross that Taylor in goal dropped and a scramble in the box allowed Wanderers to get the ball away. With the first half nearing the end it was so far so good; the home side knew a point could do it. The half time whistle went 0-0. Wanderers stayed out for half time with Linford choosing to go in. Wanderers just wanted to get on with the 2nd half.
The half time team talk was short, the message clear: keep doing what we were doing but at the same time keep off the refs back and don’t give him any reason to make a decision that Wanderers could suffer for (after seeing perhaps both Bevis and Hook booked harshly in the 1st half). The game got under way much the same as the 1st half. Both teams trying to play good football but with so much at stake players were very tense and couldn’t find that killer pass. Probably the most important goal in this Wanderers season came midway through the 2nd half. A cross from the left was met unchallenged by Hook who had broken away from midfield and with a header was able to flick the ball into the top corner and give the team a huge lift. Like any good team Linford kept going and started playing the ball around well in midfield but were unable to trouble the impressive back 3 and keeper of Wanderers. With the game moving closer and closer to the final whistle Wanderers got the 2nd with a typical Dean header who for the last few weeks had been quiet in front of goal for his standard but like any good player he stepped up to the big match occasion. A deep free kick from Worsfold floated into the box, was won in the air by Dean, the keeper came out but missed it leaving the goal unattended to send Wanderers into great celebrations. 2-0. The game was seen out by the lads for the last 10minutes. The ref finally blew the final whistle after what seemed like the longest minute ever to crown Wanderers champions!! Every single player did their job well and dug in to get it done. Credit to Linford who had played well and kept going. The last couple of games have been tight, tense, scrappy and cagey but when we needed to get the result we have done it much like the big results against Heath, Stoke Hammond, Brackley res and now Denbigh and Great Linford. What a season! Winning back to back promotions and claiming the league title a perfect way to end the season. Every player who has worn the shirt has played their part. From Big Pav in goal and later on young Jack Taylor who made some important saves (none so important as the last min save against Stoke Hammond to save 2 points). At the back, whether it be a back 3 or 4, each one has been superb. Conceding 29 goals in 24 games. Rick Worsfold and Stuart Deeble dominating in the air and chipping in with their fair share of goals. Martin Goffin, Gav Clark and Michael Crook supporting well at the back and making sure the team remained tight in defence. The midfield 3 of Lewis Hook with his never ending running and never giving up, Matt Culley snapping into tackles and winning the ball back adding some bite to the team. Steve Dean whether it be behind the striker or in the centre adding the class and always likely to come up with a goal; ending up top scorer with 17. On the wings Danny Norris adding the trickery and craft and Rich Bevis much like Dean coming up with some very important goals. A superb addition to the 2nd half of the season. Without his goals who knows what might have happened. Up front Carl Ware leading the line for much the season, scoring his fair share and always chasing and never giving up; the Heath away 1-0 win, probably his most important goal of the season and Mitchel Young adding another dimension up front also weighing in with some important goals like the Denbigh winner. Even the players who haven’t featured as much as they would have liked i.e. Rob Wilkes, David Ashcroft, Ronnie Ammusden, Dave Hamper and Esko Bandit to name a few have all played their part in this great season. Finally, a big thank you to the management team of Foxy, Mike, Scotty and Dave who without them this wouldn’t have been possible. Thanks for all your hard work. Here is to the next season and all the success it hopefully brings. See you all at the presentation evening so we can celebrate in style! MK WANDERERS 2010-2011 LEAGUE CHAMPIONS!!!
