Ladies 1st XI Season 2006-07
Sunday 10th February
Newbury FC 1 v MK Wanderers Ladies 1st XI 6
Southern Region League Division 1

MK Wanderers Ladies were back in league action at the weekend, turning in a very impressive performance away at Newbury, running out comfortable 6-1 winners.
Due to injury and family commitments MK travelled with just 11 players but this did not deter the team and they started the game in positive fashion. From the start Wanderers looked sharp and were hungrier than their opponents, outplaying Newbury throughout the game. The breakthrough came after just 10 minutes, Kim Horne winning the ball in midfield, before driving into the box and sending her shot beyond the keeper. Morag Thomas coolly converted a penalty, following a deliberate handball by a Newbury player, to make it two for Wanderers. The third goal was very much route one football, an excellent free kick from the back from Lynsey Patmore over the Newbury defence found Laura Geyton who lashed home a fine volley. The game was effectively won by half time as Thomas added two more to complete her hat trick to send MK in 5-0 up at the break, the first a calm finish following a defence splitting pass from Kelly Wing and the second a good finish from a tight angle following a cross field ball from Laura Geyton.
MK came out in the second half and picked up where they had left of before half time. They were quickly into their stride and made it six within five minutes of the restart. Right back Aimee Barrable going on a mazy run past several defenders before finding Natalie Robinson in the box who battled hard force the ball home from close range. MK were unlucky to concede a consolation goal midway through the half, a rare Newbury break fell to their striker in the box who saw her shot sneak in the bottom corner.
This was a very strong performance from Wanderers and maintains their position near the top of the Southern Region league.
Player of the match was, left back, Emily Draper who put in a very confident and assured performance both in attack and in defence.

Team: Rachael Taylor (GK), Aimee Barrable, Lynsey Patmore, Kelly Wing, Emily Draper, Lucy Hulland-Adams, Kat Higby, Kim Horne (1), Natalie Robinson (1), Morag Thomas (3), Laura Geyton (1).
Sunday 6th January
MK Wanderers Ladies 1st XI 7 v Carterton Ladies 0
Southern Region League Division 1

'MK Wanderers Ladies 1st XI kicked off the new year in style, recording an emphatic 7-0 win against league opponents Carterton, to maintain their position at the top of the league.
MK could only field 11 players for this game due to illness and injury, but they put in a very strong performance, dominating the play for long periods of the game. The game started fairly evenly with neither side creating many chances, but it was MK who got into their stride quicker and looked hungrier for the win. Morag Thomas opened the scoring with a fine header and extended the lead further with a calm finish a few minutes later. A headed goal from Natalie Robinson and a fine strike from Laura Geyton meant the Ladies went in 4-0 to the good at half time.
Wanderers were keen not to let a determined Carterton side back into the game in the second half and continued to play some attractive football. The fifth goal came courtesy of an own goal, the ball ricocheting in off a defenders leg following a MK corner. Thomas completed her hat-trick with a cool lob to make it six for Wanderers before Geyton grabbed her second of the game with a shot from the edge of the area to complete the scoring.
Kat Higby won the player of the match award for her tireless work in the centre of midfield.'

Team: Emily Draper (GK), Aimee Barrable, Lynsey Patmore, Kelly Wing, Leanne Dunne, Lucy Hulland-Adams, Kat Higby, Kim Horne, Natalie Robinson (1), Morag Thomas (3), Laura Geyton (2), OG (1).
Sunday 25th November
MK Wanderers 1st XI 8 v Newport Pagnell Ladies 0
Southern Region League Division 1

Following two weeks without a game, MK Wanderers Ladies 1st team returned to action at the weekend with an emphatic 8-0 win over local rivals Newport Pagnell Ladies in the league. The game was always going to be an intense affair and the opening 15 minutes were very frantic with neither side taking control. However, two headed goals in quick succession from Laura Geyton, both from Natalie Robinson crosses down the left wing, would settle MK and they would dominate the game from here on in. A hat-trick from Morag Thomas followed to see MK further extend their lead, The first a calm finish when through one on one with the keeper, the second a good finish from another Robinson cross and the third an excellent lob over the keeper to make it five for Wanderers. The first half scoring was completed by player of the match Natalie Robinson who netted against her old club, to send the Ladies in 6-0 up.
The second half saw the game played almost entirely in the Newport half as MK searched for more goals, but a combination of some good goalkeeping from the Newport keeper together with some indecisive finishing from MK meant they wouldn't add to their lead until the 70th minute. It was Laura Geyton who eventually made it seven with a well-struck free kick, which went in off the underside of the bar, to complete her hat-trick. The final goal of the game came 10 minutes from time, Kim Horne registering her first goal of the season, picking up the ball in the middle of the park and running at the Newport defence, before unleashing a cool shot into the top corner.
Wanderers remain top of the league with this win as they look to continue their push for promotion this season.
Sunday 4th November
Southern Region League Division 1
Burnham Ladies 1 v MK Wanderers Ladies 1st XI 1

MK Wanderers travelled to face Burnham Ladies in the league at the weekend and despite their dominance throughout the game, they came away with only a 1-1 draw to show for their efforts.
In a tight first half, Wanderers had the majority of the play with Kat Higby and Kim Horne bossing the midfield, and some excellent wing play had Burnham struggling to cope with the MK attacks. The Ladies were creating good chances for themselves and only some wayward finishing meant the half would end goalless.
MK came out in the second half and again dominated possession, playing the ball around at ease. They finally got their reward on the hour mark. Morag Thomas, returning to the side after a four-month injury lay off, meeting a Natalie Robinson cross to head the ball into the far corner. Wanderers continued to press the Burnham goal, but as in the first half were guilty of some wasteful finishing and were unable to add to their lead. MK handed Burnham a lifeline ten minutes from time, conceding a penalty, which the Burnham striker put away to level the game. Wanderers had all the possession in the final period but could not find another goal and the game finished 1-1.
Wanderers’ player of the match went to Aimee Barrable for a great all round display both in defence and attack.

Wanderers are at home next Sunday as they entertain Oxford City 'A' in the league.
Sunday 28th October
MK Wanderers Ladies 1st XI 7 v Newbury Ladies 2
Southern Region Division 1

MK Wanderers Ladies made it four league wins on the bounce at the weekend, eventually running out 7-2 winners against Newbury Ladies.
Wanderers were keen to record a victory and maintain their position at the top of the league and knew they would need a good performance to achieve this.
However, the game started badly for the home side. With Newbury only able to field 8 players, complacency crept into the MK players minds and some sloppy play early on in the game would see a spirited Newbury side take a two goal lead. This surprised the Ladies, who knew they would need to up their game to get the result they desired. As the half went on, MK began to find their feet and started stringing some passes together but they were unable to finish their chances. They did eventually register a score, Isata Kamara profiting from a spill by the keeper to poke the ball home. A second goal before the break, through Lynsey Patmore, who finished well when through one on one with the keeper, would level the game up at half time.
Newbury never gave up throughout the whole game and made it difficult for MK in the second half but Wanderers took their time and eventually made their numerical advantage count. Isata Kamara grabbing her second of the game with a volley into the corner to put MK ahead for the first time in the game. Laura Geyton then went on to grab two goals in quick succession, the first a cool finish in the bottom corner and the second a header from a Natalie Robinson cross, to make the score 5-2. A great strike from Claire Seckington would extend their lead further before Lynsey Patmore finished the scoring helping herself to her second and Wanderers seventh.
Wanderers made hard work of this game against a determined Newbury side and cannot afford to let their performances slip as they look to maintain their challenge for promotion.

Wanderer’s player of the match went to Natalie Robinson for her tireless work down the left wing.

The Ladies are in league action again next Sunday as they travel to face Burnham Ladies.
Sunday 21st October
MK Wanderers 1st XI 2 v Reading Women Reserves 1
Southern Region League Division 1

MK Wanderers Ladies 1st XI continued their good form in the league, overcoming Reading Women Reserves 2-1 on Sunday. Having played, and lost, the reverse fixture just three weeks earlier, Wanderers knew Reading were a strong side, and were keen to avenge the defeat they had suffered.
The Ladies set about their game from the first whistle and never stopped throughout the whole game, every player showing outstanding effort and commitment. In what was always going to be a tight game, Wanderers were hungrier and showed more desire. They were closing Reading down, forcing them to make mistakes and were first to the ball all over the pitch.
Wanderers deservedly made the breakthrough midway through the first half, the ball falling to Laura Geyton who volleyed home from a tight angle. The Ladies continued to press, looking for a second goal, but it would be Reading who would score next, finding the equaliser just before the break. Wanderers temporarily down to ten players due to an injury and a momentary lapse in concentration would allow the Reading striker to nip in and score.
This spurred Wanderers on and they came out in the second half even more determined to win the game, looking strong in defence, with the back four of Aimee Barrable, Lynsey Patmore, Kelly Wing and Emily Draper continually putting their body in the way and denying the Reading attackers at every opportunity. (Lynsey Patmore making a great goal line clearance at one point when it looked certain that Reading would score). Rachael Taylor backing up the defence with some good saves when needed. In attack, Wanderers looked to get the ball down and played some good football. The front two of Laura Geyton and Isata Kamara, worked hard and hassled Reading’s defenders throughout the game.
The work rate of the whole team never dropped and Reading were unable to settle in the game. In particular, the midfield quartet of Leanne Dunne, Kim Horne, Kat Higby and Natalie Robinson got through a lot of work in defence and attack to frustrate Reading all game.
The decisive goal came on 70 minutes as Wanderers won their only corner of the game. Laura Geyton swinging the ball in, finding Isata Kamara unmarked on the back post and she saw her shot eventually drop in to the goal off the underside of the bar.
Karen Kingham replaced Emily Draper for the final part of the game and proved what a tough tackler she is, making some excellent challenges to deny the Reading winger any time or space.
Reading pushed for an equaliser in the final 20 minutes, but Wanderers remained resolute in defence and held on for a hard fought victory. (Cue the celebrations!!! This was a satisfying win and the smiles on the player’s faces after the game said it all! WELL DONE GIRLS!!)
Wanderer’s player of the match went to Lynsey Patmore.

Head Coach Ronni Sunderland said after the game;
‘I could not fault the Ladies today; the effort of every player was outstanding. I was proud of them all.’

The Ladies look to maintain this form as they host Newbury in the league next Sunday.'

Thankyous
Thanks must go to Amber Withers who ran the line for us today!!
Thanks also to the numerous supporters who came down to watch the game today!!
Sunday 14th October
Carterton FC 1 v MK Wanderers Ladies 1st XI 2
Southern Region League Division 1

MK Wanderers recorded their second league victory in as many weeks on Sunday, as they earned a hard fought 2-1 win at Carterton.
Following their success at Banbury last week, the girls, unsurprisingly were in a positive frame of mind before the game. However, they knew this would be a completely different ball game and approached the match with a certain degree of caution. With Carterton having been relegated from the league above the previous season, Wanderers knew this game would be difficult and with some late withdrawals from the squad they would travel with just 11 players. However the confidence and spirit of the team remained high and their commitment on the day was outstanding.
Wanderers welcomed back ‘sick notes’ Lynsey Patmore and Kat Higby for this game, both successfully coming through the full 90 minutes!!

Head Coach Ronni Sunderland reverted to a solid 4-4-2 formation for this game, and Wanderers stood firm in a tight first half, limiting Carterton to just two efforts on goal. Wanderers looked strong going forward as well, creating chances for themselves and the breakthrough came midway through the half, player of the match Isata Kamara rising highest to head home a Laura Geyton corner.

Wanderers were slow coming out in the second half and allowed Carterton back in the game within minutes of the restart, levelling the game with a speculative long-range effort. This sparked the Ladies back into life and they soon resumed their passing game and began to dominate the play again. The decisive goal came on 65 minutes, Isata Kamara bagging her second goal of the game, following up a rebound of the bar, to place the ball beyond the reach of the keeper.

MK Wanderers Ladies 1st XI are at home this Sunday as they entertain Reading Women Reserves in the league. Kick off is at 2 o'clock at Leon School.'
Sunday 7th October
Banbury United 0 v MK Wanderers Ladies 1st XI 8
Southern Region League Division 1

MK Wanderers Ladies 1st XI returned to winning ways in emphatic style at the weekend, beating Banbury United 8-0. Wanderers looked sharp from the first whistle and dominated the play for the entire game, never letting Banbury settle.
They opened the scoring after just five minutes, Laura Geyton firing home from the edge of the box. The ladies continued to pressure the Banbury goal and doubled their lead shortly after with Lucy Hulland-Adams slotting home following some neat play down the right wing with Leanne Dunne. Laura Geyton bagged her second of the game, reacting quickest to a rebound of the bar to tuck the ball home, before Natalie Robinson was put through by Kim Horne to send her shot beyond the Banbury keeper and record her first goal for the club. (The two players involved here entertaining the team with an unusual, yet original goal celebration!!) Lucy Hulland-Adams completed the first half scoring, heading home for her second and Wanderers fifth. (Lucy trying to claim it was a fantastic diving header only to admit it actually went in off the side of her face and her eye??!!)

Wanderers came out in the second half picking up where they left off, and within a few minutes of the restart they had extended their lead, Laura Geyton completing her hat-trick, putting away a cross from the right. Chances came and went for Wanderers in the second half and the Banbury keeper was certainly kept busy. The opposite could be said at the other end, Wanderers dominance of the game meant Banbury were restricted to very few chances. The MK defence, comprising of keeper Rachael Taylor and back three Aimee Barrable, Kelly Wing and Emily Draper, were competently able to deal with any threat from the Banbury forwards and never really looked in any danger.
Karen Kingham came off the bench in the second half and showed an eagerness to get forward at every opportunity from midfield, and almost got herself on the score sheet. Wanderers seventh came through Lucy Hulland-Adams, completing her hat-trick, when she calmly lofted the ball past the keeper and the scoring was completed in the 88th minute when Isata Kamara headed home. (Another goal that went in off the eye rather than the forehead??) Lucy Hulland-Adams was voted 'player of the match'.

Head Coach Ronni Sunderland said after the game;
“This was a clinical team performance. Individually and as a team the Ladies were outstanding all over the pitch today.”

Thanks again must go to our band of travelling supporters, who came to cheer the team on. Lynsey Patmore, Morag Thomas, Jodie Bonsell and Brooke Fry with daughter Maddie, all showing their support. A special thanks to Mogs for running the line for us as well!! Thank you!!!

The Ladies travel away again next Sunday as they face Carterton in the League
Sunday 30th September
Reading Women Reserves 6
v MK Wanderers Ladies 1st XI 0
Southern Region Division 1

MK Wanderers Ladies travelled to Reading for the third week running at the weekend, only to leave empty handed once again. Following two cup exits, they faced Reading Women Reserves in the league this week, but came out second best as they lost 6-0.
Following some late withdrawals from the squad MK travelled to Reading with only 11 players available, forcing Head Coach Ronni Sunderland to make changes to the line up and ask players to play in unfamiliar positions.
Wanderers knew they were in for a tough game and so it proved to be and despite some promising passages of play, Wanderers were never really at the races and there overall performance was lacking in energy and very much under-par. After such a positive start to the season, this was a disappointing game for the Ladies.
Reading’s play and attitude to the game was better from start to finish and they appeared to want the game more, scoring three goals in each half.
Both Karen Kingham and Lucy Hulland-Adams were voted 'player of the match' for Wanderers.
The Ladies look to pick themselves next week as they travel to face Banbury United in the league.'
A special mention must go to our supporters who made the journey down to Reading with us, Morag Thomas, Kat Higby and Lynsey Patmore (a.k.a ‘Sicknotes’). Thanks for your support girls!!
Sunday 23rd September
Woodley Saints Ladies 1 v MK Wanderers 1st XI 0
Berks and Bucks County Cup 1st Round

Disappointment for ladies in the cup

'MK Wanderers Ladies were knocked out of a second cup in as many weeks on Sunday. Having lost out in the FA Cup the previous week, they were beaten 1-0 by Woodley Saints in the Berks and Bucks County Cup this week.
MK started the game well and were closing the opposition down, preventing them from playing their game. However, MK lost two players to illness and injury in the first half an hour, meaning Head Coach, Ronni Sunderland, having to reshuffle his team and players found themselves playing in several different positions throughout the half. These changes disrupted Wanderers game and Woodley looked to take advantage. MK defended well, but it would be a sloppy mistake from a corner that proved vital as the Woodley striker pounced to put them ahead.
The second half saw the Ladies come out in a positive frame of mind and determined to get themselves back into the game. They dominated the game for much of the half and played some excellent football but they lacked that decisive touch in front of goal and were unable to force an equaliser.
Wanderers player of the match went to Natalie Robinson.
MK Wanderers turn their attention back to the league on Sunday as they travel to play Reading Women Reserves.'
Sunday 16th September
Bracknell Town LFC 3 v MK Wanderers Ladies 1st XI 1
Women’s FA Cup 1st round Qualifying

Ladies bow out of the FA Cup

'MK Wanderers made the trip to Bracknell Town on Sunday in the 1st Qualifying Round of the Women’s FA Cup. With Bracknell playing in the league above Wanderers it was always going to be a difficult game. However MK conducted themselves very well and put in an excellent performance.
MK started the game slowly and Bracknell was seeing a lot of the ball. The pressure eventually telling as Bracknell took an early lead following a good move down their right. However, MK showed great determination and responded to going a goal down in a positive fashion. They began stringing passes together and were working hard for each other across the pitch. It began to show as MK had Bracknell on the back foot for long spells in the first half and only some profligate finishing in front of goal denying MK an equaliser. They eventually did level the game with a goal from Isata Kamara, who calmly slotted home at the second attempt (a good finish even though her own players didn’t even realise she had scored!!!).
A dubious penalty decision two minutes later undid all the hard work MK had put in as they found themselves behind again. It was to stay 2-1 until the break.

The second half was a very even affair with both sides cancelling each other out for the most part. A goal late on for Bracknell would see MK eventually lose out 3-1, but the Ladies took a lot from the game and hope to carry the positive performance into next week. Wanderers 'player of the match' went to Lynsey Patmore.
MK Wanderers are in cup action again next week as they travel to Woodley Saints in the Berks and Bucks Cup.'
Sunday 9th September
MK Wanderers Ladies 1st XI 3 v Havant and Waterlooville 0

MK Wanderers Ladies 1st team kicked off their new season in fine style with a hard fought victory over newly promoted side Havant and Waterlooville on Sunday. With many 1st team players unavailable, Wanderers went into the game with a somewhat depleted squad. However they had many new signings on show and these players settled very quickly allowing the team to put in a very good performance.
Showing off their new kit and with the sponsors, Buckingham Rotaract, present to watch the game, the Ladies were keen to play well and put 3 points on the board.
The game started well, with both teams testing each other in the opening 20 minutes, but it was Wanderers who would make the vital breakthrough and take the lead midway through the half. Lynsey Patmore making a nuisance of herself in the opposition penalty area and bundling home a Laura Geyton corner.
Captain Leanne Dunne and centre midfield partner Kat Higby continued their tireless work in the middle of the park, breaking up the opposition play on countless occasions, while the wingers, notably Natalie Robinson on the left, worked hard throughout to nullify any threat from out wide.
Wanderers worked hard through to half time, maintaining their slender lead and went in at the break in a positive mood. A positional change at half time saw Aquira Bailey-Browne move up front and Lucy Hulland-Adams revert to her more natural position on the wing.
Wanderers began the second half in buoyant mood and mounted several attacks on the Havant goal. Isata Kamara was a thorn in the opposition side throughout the game with her clever touches on the ball and she was rewarded on the hour mark with a goal to put Wanderers 2-0 up.
Havant came back at Wanderers trying to reduce the deficit, but the Wanderers defence of Aimee Barrable, Lynsey Patmore and Karen Kingham stood firm restricting the opposition to a few long-range efforts. Rachael Taylor on hand in goal when needed with some good saves deservedly earning a clean sheet.
Wanderers wrapped up the victory in the 80th minute with a fine strike from Aquira Bailey Browne, which the goalkeeper could only parry into her own net.
In warm conditions, this was a very good performance from the Ladies and the perfect start to the new campaign!!
They travel to Bracknell Town next Sunday in the 1st Qualifying round of the Women’s FA Cup.

The oppositions Player of the Match vote went to Morag Thomas, with MK Wanderers voting their captain Sarah Clement as Player’s Player.

The result all but ends Wanderer’s hopes of promotion to the Premier Division of the Southern Region Women’s League. Only a loss by one of their top contenders next week could see them salvage promotion by a 2nd place finish.

Sunday 23rd April 2006
MK Wanderers 3 - Aldershot 3

This was a crucial match for MK Wanderers Ladies, as they faced their main rivals for the league title in the penultimate game of the season.

The game kicked off and almost immediately Wanderers took control. Lucy Hulland-Adams played a through ball, splitting the defence, to Morag Thomas who over-powered the chasing defenders to close down on goal. Her shot hit the bottom right corner, with the keeper only able to get her finger tips to it, giving Wanderers the lead after 25 minutes.

7 minutes later, another pass through the visiting defence left them stranded, and Lucy Hulland-Adams found herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. She coolly slotted it into the back of the net, giving Wanderers a strong hold on the game.

Aldershot earned a free kick on the 43rd minute, 35 yards out. Their number 4, whipped the ball across the back line of defence and the ball eventually dropped to an Aldershot player who managed to scramble it over the line. With Aldershot back in the game, the half-time whistle went.

The 2nd half started slowly for Wanderers and they found themselves on the back foot as Aldershot continued with their “up & over” technique. The ball was played down the right hand side and with MK Wanderers closing in on the tackle, a cross-come-shot found its way over goal keeper Katie Hunt and into the back of the net. Wanderers now found themselves at 2-2 with 40 minutes left.

Again, Wanderers tried to push forward but conceded what proved a valuable corner on the 60th minute, and the Aldershot player stood up and curled in a beautiful cross straight to the head of her team-mate. Wanderers were helpless to stop their opponents taking the lead with the header hitting the net and Aldershot going 3-2 up.

In the last 15 minutes, Wanderers picked themselves up and a quick formation change and substitution saw Brooke Fry move up front with Morag Thomas. The pair quickly formed their fantastic partnership, so devastating all season, and when Thomas battled with the Aldershot defender to gain possession, Fry made a darting run through the defence. Thomas played the ball in front for her to run onto and sweetly finish in the top hand corner on the 76th minute.

Wanderers had two further chances to finish the game off but it just didn’t seem to go their way, which was very disappointing after what had been a great start to the match. The oppositions Player of the Match vote went to Lucy Hulland-Adams, with the Wanderers vote for Player’s Player being shared between Kelly Wing and Leanne Dunne.

The last match of the season will see Wanderers again play Aldershot in the reverse fixture. Without doubt the most crucial match in their history, it will decide whether Wanderers Ladies have to fight another year in Division 1, or are crowned champions and are promoted!

Next match: Away v Aldershot, Sunday 7th May.
