Saturday 6th November 2010 DELAPRE DRAGONS DAZZLERS: 2 – U11 HAWKS: 5 (U11 Cup 2nd round)
Hawks looked like they meant business from the start as they began their first game wearing the new kit sponsored by Web Warehouse. There were chances for both sides in the early stages of the game, and it was Delapre who took the lead in the 5th minute when they took advantage of the gaps in the Hawks’ defence. Hawks responded well to this early setback and continued to create chances, with particularly good efforts from Ben and Kai. In the 9th minute Hawks were awarded a penalty. The Delapre goalkeeper made a good save from Kai’s spot kick but Ben reacted really well to follow up and poke the ball into the net. Both sides continued to create chances, and although Hawks looked most likely to score Delapre regained the lead in the 26th minute with a well taken free kick from the edge of the box. Hawks weren’t behind for long, as in the 30th minute Harry R. threaded a nice ball to Kai who had his back to goal but had the time and space to swivel round and score.
Hawks continued to work hard and had several good attempts on goal, but it wasn’t until the 42nd minute that they took the lead for the first time as Tiller ran through, beat a defender and scored with a cool finish to make the score 3 – 2. Hawks increased their lead in the 56th minute as Alfie held off a strong challenge in front of goal to score, and in the final minute of the game Harry R. made it 5 – 2 with a cross/shot from the left that the Delapre keeper was unable to hold on to. This was a strong performance, and it was particularly encouraging to see the fighting spirit throughout the team right to the end of the game. There were several contenders for Man of the Match, which was eventually awarded to Kai. |
Saturday 23rd October 2010 U11 HAWKS: 4 – SOUTHSIDE UNITED STARS: 2
This was an eagerly awaited match which saw Hawks up against their old rivals.
The game was fairly even in the opening 5 minutes, with the visitors creating a couple of threats that were dealt with comfortably by the Hawks’ defence. At the other end there were good chances for Marley who shot just wide and Alfie who forced a fine save from the Southside ‘keeper.
Hawks were unlucky not to score in the 20th minute when Alfie floated in a lovely ball from the right which just needed a head on it. However, a minute later Hawks took the lead as some nice work down the left allowed Alfie the space to chip the ball into the net. Southside struck back with a well taken goal just 2 minutes later as Hawks failed to clear the ball from a throw-in. Hawks regained the lead in the 28th minute as an overhead kick from Ben found Harry R. in front of goal with plenty of time to chose his spot to score.
The 2nd half was a bit more stretched and the scores were equal again in the 35th minute as some hesitation on the left side of Hawks’ defence allowed Southside to take their chance. Despite this setback, Hawks stuck to their task and Ben in particular was close on a number of occasions with shots that skimmed the outside of the post and just went over the bar. Hawks had a golden opportunity to regain the lead in the 52nd minute when they were awarded a penalty, but sadly Ben’s effort was just wide of the left post.
Hawks’ grit and determination were finally rewarded in the 57th minute when Harry R’s shot from the edge of box beat the ‘keeper to make it 3 - 2, and in the final minute Man of the Match Tiller thumped in the 4th goal to secure a convincing win. |
Saturday 2nd October 2010 U11 HAWKS: 4 – DEANSHANGER COLTS: 6
A ten goal thriller saw Hawks take on Deanshanger, who had thumped them convincingly in a friendly a few weeks before. Hawks got off to a great start, with loads of energy, passing and movement. They had a couple of shots on goal in the opening five minutes and deservedly took the lead in the 7th minute when Tiller fired the ball in following a corner. Harry R. doubled the lead in the10th minute with a great shot from the edge of the box. Hawks were full of confidence and really hungry for the ball, and had several good goal attempts. The pick of these was a nice shot from Tiller that hit the bar, with the follow – up effort being well saved by the Deanshanger ‘keeper. Deanshanger began to fight back but Lewis and Man of the Match Scott were particularly strong at the back and dealt comfortably with the threat. A lapse in concentration allowed Deanshanger to score in the 23rd minute, but a minute later Hawks restored their two goal lead as a corner from Harry. R was headed in by Kai.
Deanshanger came out fighting in the second half and scored two goals in 10 minutes to level the score; the first a long range shot that went through Kieran’s hands and the second an unchallenged header from a corner. Deanshanger took the lead in the 43rd minute from a nicely struck free – kick that again went unchallenged. Some Hawks players were beginning to tire, which allowed Deanshanger the space and time to attack almost continuously and score two more goals in quick succession. Hawks’ only meaningful attack of the 2nd half came in the 58th minute when a nice passing move involving Jordan and Ben allowed Tiller to slot the ball in at the near post, to make the final score 4 – 6. This was a real game of two halves. In the first half Hawks were lively and worked hard, whilst the second half was played almost entirely in the Hawks’ half as players tired and Deanshanger took full advantage of the space and time available |
Saturday 25th September STONY STRATFORD SCORPIONS: 1 - U11 HAWKS: 4 Under 11 Cup round 1
Hawks started brightly and took the lead in the 3rd minute when Alfie guided the ball into the net following a nice move down the right. Hawks continued to take the game to their opponents, but Scorpions equalised from a penalty in the 16th minute following an unfortunate handball. Hawks retained their composure and continued to create chances, and regained the lead in the 26th minute when a good passing move resulted in a shot from Alfie which was pushed out by the ‘keeper for a simple tap – in by Tiller. The second half continued with more good football from Hawks. The defence was more settled, with Scott, Lewis and Man of the Match Bailey covering well for each other and soaking up the pressure. Marley was unlucky not to score, firstly from a strong run and shot that was pushed away for a corner, and then when he hit the post a few minutes later. In the 46th minute Alfie scored his second goal of the game with a neat shot following some good work down the left. A minute later Hawks worked the ball through midfield and Marley finally got a well – deserved goal with a cool finish. Hawks were sometimes guilty of playing too narrow instead of using the full width of the pitch, and there were occasions particularly in the first half when the defenders were too deep, but overall this was an encouraging performance. It was particularly nice to see the energy and movement on the pitch, and the positive support from the sidelines also contributed to a highly satisfying win.
Saturday 11th September TATTENHOE REDS: 2 - U11 HAWKS: 2
Hawks kicked off the league season with a trip to Tattenhoe Reds. The game began with early pressure from Hawks, which lead to two corners in the first five minutes. There was a scare in the 7th minute when Tattenhoe hit the post, and four minutes later Hawks went behind as defenders were pulled out of position which allowed Tattenhoe space and time in front of goal. Hawks continued to pass the ball and use the width of the pitch, but were unable to take advantage of opportunities in front of goal.
Hawks went further behind early in the second half as some players hesitated after a possible handball, rather than playing to the referee’s whistle, and Tattenhoe scored with a fine shot. Hawks continued to create chances, with some nice passing and movement, and in the 51st minute Alfie finally scored from a penalty following handball by a Tattenhoe player. Hawks pushed hard for an equaliser and in the 59th minute Man of the Match Alfie scored again, this time with a nicely floated free kick. This was an encouraging performance, particularly in the second half, and showed the importance of players keeping in their position and working hard as a team. |
