Saturday 6th February 2010
MK Wanderers V Toddington Rovers

The festive season is now over, and the U8’s would like to wish everyone a happy new year. The second half of season is now underway and we started with a home game against Toddington Rovers.

First Quarter
We were guilty in the first half of the season for starting off quite slow, but not the case in this game. First five minutes we came out the blocks with a lot of enthusiasm, some good passes and a lot of movement off the ball it was end to end action. Badis picked up the ball deep in our own half and made a good pass into midfield to Jose who was closed down very quickly but managed to squeeze a pass out wide on the left to Laurie who turned and threaded the ball through to Benji. As Benji lined himself for the shot, there defender closed him down quickly and the ball rebounded back up to the half way line, where there striker picked it up and turned towards our goal took two steps and unleashed a rasping shot low to our keepers left and into the back of the net. It was very good goal.
I think the goal kind of shook our boys a little I don’t know why as they seemed to be cope quite well with the oppositions forays up front. But the shock didn’t last long; Jay picked up the ball in his own half and ran up the left wing, took on one player, passed him and kept going into there half. I had a little grin on my face as I watched him, as the defender came to close him down leaving Benji free in the middle I saw Jay look up way up his options and then slide the pass through to Benji in the middle who carried on into the box and shot for goal, the keeper made a good attempt to save it. But as it bounced off him, jay who had kept up with play ran in to score the rebound. First quarter ended 1-1.

Second Quarter
Much like the first, with both teams attacking and defending, a very good game to watch for all I think. Half way through the second half Toddington got a corner, which was well struck, high and right into the middle of our box. It was like a pinball, first Sam got a hand to it and it landed at the strikers feet who tried to shoot which then deflected off about 4 players, it was hard to follow the ball lol. But eventually one of there players poked a foot at the ball and it trickled in to give them the lead once more. But not unlike the first quarter we kept battling away. It really is a good feeling when they score a goal through passing and moving, it means they do listen some times at training lol. This was from back to front; Sam rolled the ball out to Sean who took it out wide right who then passed it onto Lewis. He took on one player passed him and then passed into the middle of the park where Taylan was waiting he then turned and made a good pass out to Ricky who he saw had started a run back out to the right wing Ricky controlled the pass and kept on down the wing two players trying to close him down, he had obviously decided to carry on his run down the right wing even though there was two players to get passed. He passed one and then two and as he reach the bye line looked up to see Laurie who had made a run from half way, all the way into there box. Ricky passed the ball hard and to the back post just at the right time for Laurie to arrive and slot it passed the keeper. Another well worked equaliser, 2nd quarter ended 2-2.

Third Quarter
Both teams had chances in this quarter, but both teams tried not to make the same mistakes as the first half. Still end to end game though.

Final quarter
Sam the Keeper had asked if he could take a turn out on the pitch, to which I didn’t have a problem with, and Sean said he would go in goal. There were a few worried looks on the faces of the parents I can tell you but I had faith in my team. I did doubt my faith on two occasions I must admit. Halfway through the second half I think my outfield players, ‘how can you say it’ got over excited in one of there attacks. The ball broke to the opposition who quickly kicked it up to there striker who was in acres of space in our half, and all our players in there half. As he headed for goal Sean came out a few steps and adjusted his position in the box, as the striker entered the box he shot low to Sean’s left. Sean dived left and saved the shot, a good save my young padowan. Late into the quarter came Toddingtons last chance as they were in our box, just like there first goal a bit of pinball with at least 4 players fighting for the ball. Out of no where came this body diving through the players to grab the ball away from the striker’s foot as he swung to shoot. Sean said after the game the player’s foot just missed his face because he felt the wind in front of his nose from the players boot.

Although we never won our opening game, I felt the boys played extremely well and could not fault them. Lewis was the unsung hero today as he worked tirelessly in every position. I would say his passing, tackling and all round ball control was very good. Broke up a lot of there attacks and started a lot of ours. MOTM Lewis, well done kid.
